about

A colorful wall-mounted artwork showing two raised hands on a blue polka-dot background, photographed in an indoor gallery with a reflective surface on the right reflecting the scene.

Hi, I’m WallShapes, a UK spray‑paint artist, creating contemporary artworks which are stencilled onto wooden panels. My paintings are easy to hang and full of colour.

My wall art is separated into two categories:

  • I make small, shaped, wooden wall art panels which I spray-paint using hand-cut stencils, these are usually painted in small batches or as exclusives. These have a discrete and easy to hang fixture. There is more information about these below, and they are available to buy in my shop.
  • I also paint much larger pieces onto a more traditional style cradled panel, and are much more abstract and are displayed for you here in my gallery and on my 'method' page.

My work leans into digital and pop‑art aesthetics, and I love exploring a wide mix of themes and imagery. Spray‑paints and paper stencils are my main tools, helping me create bright collectible pieces in a wide range of shapes and sizes.

My spray-paintings have a street‑art connection that brings a bold, modern, urban feel to interior spaces. Every shaped painting that I make is an original because of their handmade nature.

I’m also turning the paper stencils that I use myself into limited‑run original artworks which are a fresh, handmade, alternative to prints.

See below for more details about my shaped paintings...

Thanks for looking, WS😁

🔼these are some of the smaller 'shaped' paintings that i have painted 🔽and a gallery is underneath explain a little on how they get made

A dense, top-down close-up of numerous spray paint cans with colorful labels and silver metal nozzles, filling the entire frame.🔼 shake shake shake...shake shake..

🔼 some more of my paints.

-i love the depth of colour and the techniques available to an artist using spray paints. the colours and finishes can be manipulated and be glossy and jewel-like or very powdery and crystal-like depending on the techniques used. my style is quite sharp and I get that by using hand-cut fresh paper stencils to get high details -

Doing colour swatches is important to accurately see the colour of the paint in the cans.🔼🔼 colour swatching new cans of spray paint in a studio corner.

🔼 scroll sawed and pre-sanding..

🔼🔼 hand sanding and preparing the wood.

- i fill and smooth most of the deeper natural grain in the surfaces of the wood, but i also leave some finer grain to add a texture to the paintings finish -

Several black undercoated crown shaped artworks arranged on a paint-splattered floor in a workshop, with a filter canister, bubble mesh cover, and air dryer visible in the background.

🔼 layering undercoats.

- an undercoat is important because it makes the surface more uniform and the painting more durable. i use gesso which is 'hyper-pigmented', flat, and very strong -

Spray painting the reverse of crowns purple.
🔼 painting the reverse side...pre-drilling.

 - i spray-paint the backs of the paintings different colours and combinations to make each small batch even more individual...and to test new colours☺-

Some short info about WallShapes....

A spherical fish-eye image spray cans in many colors, including turquoise, red, yellow, green, pink, blue, and metallic gold, set against a solid black background.

So why work with spray paints?

'I enjoy working with spray paints because of the strength of the colour pigment and the ranges in the medium, and also all the techniques available to an artist when using them. Using stencils also allows me to create with much greater tightness and control of the paintings appearance. It’s a medium that suits the way I think and create. I also appreciate when painting a series how it makes each painting unique, as no two pieces ever come out the same.'

Tools of the trade..?

'Other attributes crucial to developing my wall art other than spray cans?.. A scroll saw, a big digital drawing tablet, lots of space and quality air filter/s/masks, sanders, a paint-can shaker, and really bright situational lighting...loads!!...oh yeah absolutely a big printer too!!..'

What the term “WallShapes” means...

'My art was really abstract when I first started painting so I've been known artistically as WallShapes ever since, but my art pieces are called WallShapes, and this website is called WallShapes too🙂'
